Cat Loving Adventures in Antalya

ree

Visiting Turkey this year was an insight into a unique approach toward the issue of stray cats. I say stray cats because in fact it's very unusual to see stray dogs! Along with the rich culture, fascinating history and architecture, cats are definitely a striking part of this country.

I am unsure why there are so many cats on the streets, however it was refreshing to witness such adoration from the community for the stray feline companions. Every restaurant, every cafe, every hotel…they all seemed to have a supremely well-looked after resident cat (or two). On top of that, the cats in Antalya were very trusting of humans so more often than not strokes and cuddles are on the agenda.

Once you venture away from the main roads it wasn’t uncommon to see feeding spots and water stations, a sign that everybody chips in to help these majestic animals. One particular moment that struck me was seeing a group of men at a cafe having a drink together. One of these men then saved some of his food, and whistled to the cafe cat for a feed and a cuddle. All of the men then proceeded to woo and faun over this animal. A heartwarming sight!

No one city or country has the answers, nowhere is perfect. However, to see the genuine care in this city towards animals that don’t have a fixed home or shelter, was truly a sight to behold. It just shows if we work together our compassion can make a real difference.
